Quick Test of Open Shot Timer

Hardware shot timers are kind of expensive. There are some phone apps on the commercial app stores, but they’re all ad-infested spyware. In this video I test out an old open source app called Open Shot Timer.

Videos:

The video shows some tests with a 9mm pistol (Sig P365 XL) and and 22lr pistol (Beretta M9A1_22). In the tests:

  • It seems to record the correct number of shots.
  • The times are mostly similar to what I get trying to pick times out of the video recording.
  • The audio tone used as a go beep is bad for video recording. It’s not great for actually using it either.

My phone likes to record stray button presses and swipes, so I ended up testing the app with the phone on a solid surface. Trying to use it by putting the phone in my shirt pocket after pressing the button didn’t work.

This app is pretty old: Written in 2009 and abandoned around 2011. I ended up having to port it forward to a more recent version of Android to get it running on my phone.

I may try to build an APK and maybe even release on Fdroid.
